In each of the following sets of sentences, three sentences are grammatically correct and one sentence is not grammatical. Identify the incorrect sentence and mark your answer sheet.

1. 1) Very less of the natural elements are found on their own.
2) Some animals have only one partner throughout their lives.
3) Stem cells are body cells from which all other types of cells form.
4) On entering the stomach, food is mixed with gastric juices.

4. 1) The hunger got worse with each passing day.
2) They sat together by their own open-air fire.
3) Heard about the woman gave me an idea.
4) Uncle Billy was just no good, and he had to go.

5. 1) As the saying has it, ‘Forecasting is difficult’.
2) Gilman was a friend of Jane Addams.

8. 1) It felt strange to run and not feeling his feet when they hit the ground.
2) Arguments must be confined to the evidence that has been presented.
3) Of the 45,000 deaf-blind people in the US, 11,000 are children.
4) It was large enough for me to use one of the rooms as my laboratory.

9. 1) A carbon compound called an ester gives an apple its distinctive smell.
2) Bicycles provide numerous benefit by comparison with motor vehicles.
3) I remember the crowd listening intently and hundreds of heads nodding.
4) There are major challenges facing any scientist working at the community level.

10. 1) The world’s first synthetic fabric, nylon, was developed in 1938.
2) The first two parts are fairly obvious, but the third is less so.
3) These are things written by people who lived in ancient history.
4) Writing are one of the greatest inventions of the species human.

پاسخ تشریحی سوالات گرامر EPT

1. گزینۀ ۱  بعد از less «کمتر» از حرف اضافۀ of استفاده نمی‌شود. در نتیجه، در گزینۀ ١، بجایvery less، بایستی از very little «مقدار خیلی کمی» استفاده شود (ر. ک. به بخش ١ کتاب Fast Grammar).

2. گزینۀ ۲  در گزینۀ ٢ با یک جمله‌ وارۀ اسمی در نقش مفعول فعل knows مواجه هستیم. how ربط‌ دهندۀ جمله‌ وارۀ اسمی و Connor فاعل است؛ در جمله‌ وارۀ اسمی به فعل نیاز داریم. فعل‌واره نمی‌تواند نقش فعل را ایفا کند. در نتیجه، ending up بایستی به فعل تبدیل شود. ended up صحیح است (بخش ۴، درس ٣ Fast Grammar).

3. گزینۀ ۴  در گزینۀ ۴، بعد از صفت‌های glassy و smooth بایستی از اسم استفاده شود. در اینجا بایستی and حذف شود (بخش ٨ Fast Grammar).

4. گزینۀ ۳  از اسم مصدر و مصدر با to می‌توان در نقش‌های اسمی (فاعل یا مفعول) استفاده کرد. ولی از فعل نمی‌توان در نقش فاعل (یا مفعول) استفاده کرد. بنابراین، در گزینۀ ٣، کاربرد فعل heard در نقش فاعل نادرست است و بجای آن بایستی از hearing استفاده شود (بخش ٣ Fast Grammar).

5. گزینۀ ۴  از ضمیر others نمی‌توان قبل از اسم استفاده کرد (ضمیر جانشین اسم می‌شود). در نتیجه، در گزینۀ ۴، قبل از اسم women بایستی بجای others از other استفاده شود (بخش ١۵ Fast Grammar).

6. گزینۀ ۳  در گزینۀ ٣، برای اشاره به مکان بایستی بجای ضمیر موصولی that از in which استفاده شود (بخش ۴، درس ۴ Fast Grammar).

7. گزینۀ ۲  در گزینۀ ٢، با یک جملۀ ساده مواجه هستیم که بایستی یک فاعل و یک فعل داشته باشد. ship فاعل و was فعل آن است. بنابراین، فعل divided در جمله اضافی است و بجای آن بایستی از وجه وصفی معلوم dividing استفاده شود (بخش ٣ Fast Grammar).

8. گزینۀ ۱  با توجه به الگوهای همسانی لیست‌ها، در گزینۀ ١، قبل و بعد از and بایستی همسان باشند. قبل از and، بعد از صفت strange به‌درسـتی از مصدر با to استفـاده شـده است. بنابراین، بعـد از and نیـز بایسـتی از مصـدر با to استفاده شود، نه اسم مصدر feeling. شکـل صحیـح not to feel است (بخش ٧ Fast Grammar).

9. گزینۀ ۲  بعد از صفت numerous «متعدد»، بایستی از اسم قابل‌شمارش جمع استفاده شود. در نتیجه، در گزینۀ ٢، بجای اسم مفرد benefit از اسم جمع benefits استفاده شود (ر. ک. به بخش ١ Fast Grammar).

10. گزینۀ ۴  بعد از اسم مصدر، مصدر با to و جمله‌ واره‌های اسمی بایستی از فعل مفرد استفـاده شود. بنابراین، در گزینۀ ۴، بعد از فاعـل اسم مصـدری writing بایستی از فعل مفرد is استفاده شود. (بخش ۶ Fast Grammar).
